Poor quality, poor customer serviceSep 03, 2010 My daughter enjoyed playing with this toy briefly, until it cracked. Customer service was useless. This was not money well spent.
Fantastic (especially for older kids)Aug 24, 2010 I think the manufacturer's age range is more accurate than Amazon's. While a younger child may have fun stuffing the coin slot with pennies or scanning things, by the time that they are old enough to really use it, they will probably have lost pieces and wrinkled the dollars. Not that they couldn't use it, but this is really geared towards older kids.
This will appeal to an older kid because of its many functions. There is a process to checking out, and the machine is able to calculate totals, discounts from the coupon, do voids, and calculate change. It's very cool.
The only things I dislike about it is that if the coin drawer is not snapped into place, it won't function. The drawer flies open, flinging coins and it encourages youngsters to do the same. The weigh bar is a bit flimsy. It could also use a portable scanner. However, these are small complaints as the rest of the register is solid and complicated enough that it will keep an older child occupied.
Also, it doesn't have Barbies, Thomas or Dora on it, it's completely unisex.
Kids love it, and it's educationalAug 21, 2010 Had this for over a year and the kids still enjoy playing with it often...unlike the majority of their other toys. Very educational and promotes imaginative play.
great toy but scanner doesn't talk nowJul 25, 2010 I love this toy for my 2 boys and 1 daughter but the scanner doesn't talk anymore after only having it 7 months. I thought replacing the batteries might help or maybe there was a switch on it that turned it back on. No such luck. Great toy but wish the scanner still talked.

Worked only for a couple days, then a big disappointment...May 24, 2010 Learning Resources Teaching Cash Register
My 4-yr old waited over a week for this promising cash register - he checked every day to see if we got the package. When we finally did, he was so excited, but right away I noticed that the display was very dim, and we used fresh batteries which I tested just to be sure. We figured that's just the way it's made, and since you could still see the numbers, it was OK. The "scanner" button on the left side just pulls out a random price on the display when pressed, which was disappointing. Would have been nice to have a real scanner that reads actual bar codes, like the "Zillions" or "YOUniverse" toy cash registers have. The coupon card also seems to give a random discount. But the real fun part for my son was the fact that he could insert coins into the coin slot and the register would tell him what kind of a coin it was (using either the play money that came with it or real coins). But a couple days later the register started giving the wrong readout for inserted coins, as though the computer got all messed up (like it would say "nickel" when a penny was inserted, or "penny" when a quarter was inserted, etc., and it was consistent). The instruction manual said that if the register starts acting strangely, there is a reset button on the back and we used it, but apart from just restarting the register it didn't do anything to correct the computer readouts. Needless to say my son was extremely disappointed (it made him frustrated and cry!) and the register is going back. We will try one of the others.
